  • Wasabi

    New Orleans, LA

Wasabi is a “hole-in-the-wall” Sushi restaurant and Bar located slightly Northeast of Jackson Square and the French Market. It’s at the corner of Frenchmen and Burgundy, it’s pretty difficult to miss it. I use to go here a lot before Katrina.. after the storm I never thought to go back there. (I discovered Kanno ) But there are reasons to visit this fine sushi establishment, I really enjoy the Squid Steak! lol

    Wasabi Shui Mai

    Squid Steak

Okay.. you may be wondering why the hell would someone go to a Japanese
restaurant and order “Dim Sum”… (aka the Wasabi Shui Mai) I’m a risk-taking eater..
unlike my unadventurous girlfriend! haha The shui mai
was spicy and had decent flavors, but I wasn’t a fan of the texture..
it was a bit oversteamed for my liking. Now onto the Squid Steak..
it was just as I remembered it, bold flavors and a sizzling platter.
    The
picture does not do it justice. Definitely try it out if you go..

    Baked Salmon

    Rice Paper Roll

The second half of lunch was comprised of a Baked Salmon Roll and the Rice Paper Roll. The Baked Salmon was kind of pricey for it’s portion size. Besides the price, it was actually pretty good. The Rice Paper Roll was filled with avocados, eel, and crunchy stuff. I liked the contrast in texture (yeah so what? I enjoy crunchy rolls lol) and the dipping sauce was unique and went along with it quite well.

It’s okay to have those “favorite places” to eat at regularly.. but every once in a while, you gotta change it up and try out some new places. If you’re in the market for different sushi in New Orleans, you should probably give this place a shot.. Service is good and the atmosphere is very cozy. You’ll enjoy yourself!

  • all of that look DELISH… I will try it and you are making me hungry for the rolls!!

  • I can give you the recipe for the squid steak if you want? I worked for Wasabi and for Rock-n-Sake which are pratically the same Phat was chef at Rock-n-Sake before he ventured and opened up Wasabi

  • the wasabi shumai is mushy b/c they buy frozen already made shumai, they dont steam it but dunk it in a bowl of hot water and microwave it for 3 mins, if they would put it in a shallow plate with a lil water, cover with plastic wrap and microwave it for 1 min the results will be much better.

  • i don’t know why you read it, but thanks for commenting! lol just forward to your gf. =)

my fav thing there was the baked salmon. it was so yummy. houston doesn’t have baked salmon anywhere on the map! i always ask for it and they give me this really inquisitive look and i just give up and say, “nevermind!” gotta go home for baked salmon….

  • mmmMM..i always ordered the squid steak when i go to japanese restaurants.  sooo goood!

  • god that looks good.

i’m eating mcnuggets right now and just lost my appetite for them

  • i will have to try that squid steak, very soon!

  • you need to come to japan because if you eat sushi here, everything in the states taste like crap.

  • if you are ever in the NC area…triangle area. raleigh durham chapel hill. Do visit a asian fusion place called Jujube. I used to work there. and the food is amazing.

  • The Wasabi Shui mai and Rice Paper Roll looks delicious! Do they have something like this in the NYC area?

  • Wasabi shumai is da bomb! You can get it at a lot of sushi places and sake bars in NYC. My favorite is Decibel in Manhattan. If you want I can take you on a date there since you’re so cute.

Also, I forget the name of the place but there is a deli in midtown somewhere that has all kinds of import Japanese products. One I had such a bad craving for wasabi shumai I found that place and bought a few packages of them frozen. They are incredibly cheap to buy this way and the same ones you get at the restaurants. Preparation is a snap too – you just put them in a steamer for about 5 minutes and then gorge yourself.

I’ve never had squid steak but it looks incredible so that’s definitely on my list of things to try next.

  • I always order the wasabi shrimp, the phoenix roll, & super crunchy roll! They’re so good!
