Nor-Joe's and Muffulettas too

Metaire, LA

Front of Nor-Joe

Nor-Joe is located right by the tracks off Metairie road. In the heart of Old Metaire. They sell everything from fancy olive oils to pre-made frozen ravioli. They have a decent selection of cheeses and dried pastas too. But stores like this one are what they call a "dying breed". You can go to places like Whole Foods or any other large grocery store and get pretty much the same kinda stuff. I like shopping here because they have the stuff I want and the prices aren't too bad, reason enough right?

A look inside..

Mozo Fireballs

Muffuletta

Did I mention they also have a deli inside? Yes fresh cuts of all the cured Italian meats you come to expect. On top of that, sandwiches are also made here. One of the more popular sandwiches offered is the Muffuletta. And yes, I know everyone says go to "Central Grocery" it's the original.. but as long as it taste good, what's in a name? It's all about putting out the best possible product, right?

For those of you who don't know what this Muffuletta is.. it's basically this enormous Italian sandwich made with a round (10 inch) foccacia-like bread.. it's sliced in half then a layer of cheese (probably provolone) is melted, next comes the Mordella, Salami, and Capicola.. with a layer of marinated "Olive Salad"  and another round of meats some more cheese and finally topped with the other half of the bread. If you like "Italian meats" and tangy Olive Salad... it's a really great treat! One of these are more than enough to serve 2 people. You can order a "half" or a "quarter" of a sandwich if you're eating alone.

Lmao! Do people ever say anything when they see you walk in and take pictures?

Idk I think the fireballs look gross lmao. I have a thing about cheese being gross when its not melted.
And that sandwich looks good but I'd only eat the olives and bread lmao.
I love food i do and im not really picky but non melted cheese and cold cuts
are two things i really dont like lmao.

Muffuletta...no one around here (central CA) knew what it was. About a year ago I made some for my family. I started to think maybe it WAS cajun after all those years thinking it was italian. I grew up not too far from Metairie. I really miss them.

What a fantastic area you have here! I love reading about your experiences.   I am not sure I could ever be a chef.  Although anyone who can make  choc covered strawberries has my heart.   Have been to La and Ms a few times. My son is military in Gulfport and when we visited him when he came back from Iraq April of 06, all I wanted to do was go back to Cafe DU Monde.  I love that place, maybe more the atmosphere and hustle and bustle then anything else, but the beignets are to die for.   When I was in N'awlins for a conference about 15 years ago we really found some neat restaurants. I would love to have visited this store.  Need to go back to Ms and then to LA to visit.  Thanks for sharing!

I would have really liked to check out the chicken noodle consommé shooter! That sounds really good!

Muffulettas sound so...strange. I don't know, I guess I couldn't really get over the olive mixture/tapenade. I'm sure it's great though. Can't knock it till you try it!

Yeah, I don't like Rudy's. Have you been to the Salt Lick? I heard they're really good but I have yet to go. I'm jealous of my boyfriend because that's the first place his new job took him for their first company dinner. boooooo!

Anyway, I do like EZ's. The summer following the freshman year, EZ's became a frequent hang-out location for this Physics study group that I was a part of. Good memories!

That is the reason Italians elsewhere do not know about it. It is a New Orleans Italian thing.
