Wedding food..
Harvey, LA
Two friends of mine recently got married. A lot of drinking, mainly Heinken and Hennessy (it was a Vietnamese wedding lol). Overall It was a fun wedding with decent food.
Crab Corn Soup
Asian Antipasto?
Shrimp Goi
Stuffed Crab Claw
Duck with Buns
Fried RiceComplaints and Props? The soup was nicely flavored but it was very thick.. a little too much cornstarch? The “Antipasto” wasn’t spectacular and it wasn’t bad either, would have been fine with or without it. The Vietnamese shrimp salad was very good and the crispness of the chips gave it just the right amount of contrast. The stuffed crab leg was decent but the dipping sauce was a little bland. The roasted duck was really good and so was the lobster too! (not pictured, I guess I got a little excited) There was also a hotpot, not bad.. the broth was a little weak. And lastly the fried rice.. a little soy sauce, black pepper, and hot sauce would have done the trick..
Wedding CakeAnd we can’t forget dessert.. There was no gigantic wedding cake. Disappointment? not at all.. I thought it was a great idea. Individual cakes look so much better and you don’t have to worry about the mess of cutting and plating! I know every girl dreams of having a beautiful wedding cake.. but isn’t this just plain practical? (note: one friend is a doctor and the other is a lawyer.. lol)
Ideal wedding reception for me? Reserve the 77 seats at the French Laundry and have my wedding reception there! For the few that get invites, it’ll be a wedding they’ll never forget.. lol I wonder if Thomas Keller would do that for me. I added it up and it would cost $20,000 at roughly $260 a head.. That’s for the food, wine, and tip.. I guess I won’t be inviting too many friends of friends or any at all for that matter. This will strictly be V.I.P. only. =)
If you think about it… you’ll end up doing this huge 300-400 person wedding. (half the people you don’t even know) And what do you get out of it? Decent food, a wasted $20k, and 330 more people than you really wanted to begin with. haha

That cake looked fantastic! Yummm…
The little cakes are très beau.
Looks delish! Although now I’m getting hungry, and it’s nowhere near my lunch hour!
very pretty food
but wedding receptions do not have to cost that much
for my two daughters ,our family prepared the food, a buffet in both cases and went off well
We are prepping to do a third one this fall so this blog caught my eye.
Ahhh – I haven’t had corn and crab soup in forever. I miss my old friend. Catching up on the other posts too. I have about three people I work with that went to culinary school, found out the crappy pay and long hours weren’t for them and now work in real estate, architecture, and contract management. Big change.
You’re right – wedding receptions can cost a fortune. We keep ours small – less than 100 people and had a blast. Less work and that way we could also afford a much nicer place (Houmas House) with better food (the important stuff! Ha).
Keep up the great posts!
mmmm
i think your estimate may be on the low end…. i wouldn’ be surprised if they charge you for 2 seatings… $500/person… my ideal wedding is to rent a mansion in the hamptons for $10k -20k for the week.. and then have the food catered.. mostly bbq stuff…. casual and intimate… with plenty of rooms for drunken guests to sleep over =)
i agree..i want a small wedding so i can remember EACH person that was there!
i read somewhere earlier this week, that there is a company out in LA that RENTS fake wedding cakes… the things people do…
wedding food is so yummy!
Yes, I love individual cakes. Or a tower of cupcakes!
i better be one of those vip’s!
the cupcakes for weddings thing is becoming a big trend. i’m seeing it more often (in wedding planning at least). not my own ok?! but i love the individual caked idea. it also makes the guests feel extra special. am i right or am i right? =)
Having a small wedding does sound nice (though knowing my family, it’d be impossible. How can you not invite so and so? And your cousins that you never met? And your cousins cousins?) haha Well how about have a cheap lunch reception and only invite the close close family and friends to dinner. My cousin served vietnamese sandwiches at her wedding lunch (but we went to a Chinese restaurant for dinner). -L
I was just talking to some friends, and we all agreed that small wedding cakes taste better too!
(random)mmm i love your posts!….yeah i want your job..hahahha..mm food
Looks like a feast to be proud of still. Definately way better than I could cook. My friend got married recently and she did the same thing, individual party cakes. Is a good idea.
wedding food should have it’s own category of delicious recipes. great job chef_eats!
omg i’m so hungry now.
<3Always,
Nary
Viet wedding..looks pretty cool! I bet the cake taste delicious!
i went to brocatto’s today! yum!
The best wedding favour and cake idea i ever encountered (i go to at least 5-7 weddings a year) was this:
Each table got a minature wedding cake in the middle of their table. Every table got a different flavour. Each cake was decorated beautifully, just like a mini wedding cake should be.
At the end of the meal, the guests were given take out containers and told to cut a slice off of each wedding cake to sample every flavour and to get to know all the guests there. SO AWESOME.
mmmm the mini wedding cake is a great idea since I just thought about giving cupcakes as my wedding favors.
