Muriel’s at Jackson Square
New Orleans, LA
It’s been while since I’ve been to Muriel’s. I realized that back then, I didn’t appreciate it as much as I should have. The wonderful food, the lovely view of the Jackson Square and the beautiful dining rooms. Each room has it’s own distinct feel.. Near the bar area, it’s lined with brick walls and a has high ceiling where a skyroof shines down to give it that “outdoor courtyard” feel. We sat in the dining room and was able to observe the flowing streetside foot traffic.. It was all very comfortable!
Inside Muriels
Bread and Butter
Salpicon of Blue Crab
Creole Crab Whiskey Bisque
Pan Seared Soft Shell Crabs
Closer look…For the month of June, Muriels is doing a “Blue Crab Special”.. a 4 course crab tasting menu for $38 a person.. it’s not a bad deal! The first course was “Salpicon of Blue
Crab, Mango and Avocado with a Coulis of Mango”, to capture the best of each ingredient in it’s purest form AND be able to make it your own? That’s exactly what they were able to do in the Muriel kitchens. Second course was a rich but sublte “Creole Crab Whiskey Bisque”. The perfect consistency and a great coating of crab essence on your palate, the whiskey played along nicely.Third couse was the main entree.. “Pan Seared Soft Shell Crabs topped with Jumbo Lump Crab and Creole Meuniere”. I love soft shell crabs and this dish never got too full of itself.. it was a rustic New Orleans style dish, served in a New Orleans sized portion. Delicious!
Aborio Rice Pudding Cake with “Rangoon”The dessert course was “Jumbo Lump Aborio Rice Pudding Cake with Coconut
and Creole Cream Cheese Rangoon served with Pineapple and Lemon Grass Bisque”. That has got to be the longest dessert name I’ve ever seen. The dessert was good, but it didn’t “wow” me.. Maybe I just don’t like rice pudding? It was a little too sweet for my taste.. But the rice and rangoon together was pretty interesting.
Chef Eats’ Video
This was the scene as we were walking out of Muriels. You gotta love the easy going nature of this city. All around the city, there’s just a wonderfully relaxed vibe. If you’ve never been to New Orleans, this video will give you a little insight on what the city is all about. Check it out!

Wow. $38 for a 4-course crab meal is a steal!
BTW. I met Gary Danko. Well, “met” in this case means “I saw him and took a bunch of photographs of him at an event.” Maybe I’ll actually introduce myself today: “Hi Chef Danko, my friend is a huge fan of your restaurant. Not me. Oh, it’s not because I wouldn’t like your food, it’s just it’s incredibly overpriced. What’s up with that? Oh well. Hey, do you think I can get a gift certificate for a free meal?”
j/k – I’m not THAT socially awkward. I hope.
