Cafe du Monde
New Orleans, LA
The Horror! Another coffee shop? Ok not just another one… It is THE coffee shop of New Orleans.
Shops on the way to Cafe du MondeWhen I lived in Houston a few years ago, Beignets were on my top 5 list of “Things I missed from New Orleans”, right next to Crawfish Boils. Living back in the city, a lot of the locals take Cafe Du Monde for granted.. I am one of them. With locations in the malls and all around the city.. it’s easy to overlook them. Then I remebered the crappy Beignets served in Texas.. so I decided to visit the French Quarter one afternoon.
The Original Location..
Beignets and Iced Coffee!
Inside the Beignet! lolIf you’ve never had one, do not go to “New Orleans Beignets” or “Crappy Beignets” or “Whatever beignets”, go to the Cafe Du Monde! The beignets have a soft, slightly crisp exterior with a dense, warm interior and topped with powdered sugar! And it’s just really good! lol
Iced Chicory Coffee =)
Inside… large and comfortable..Ok.. ideally (with such a high profile place) you expect the inside to be fairly clean and the service to be spectacular.. it’s not all that when it comes to decor and service. So if you don’t care about those things, you will enjoy the food and coffee. And the ambience is wonderfully New Orleans! Surrounded by the French architecture, you can’t help but be put into a “chill” state of mind. Use the complimentary water to wash your hands. (not for drinking)

Love crawfish boils, not a big fan of beignets and I make my cafe sua da with Cafe Du Monde.
oh yeah, once I ate 10 lbs of crawfish. ok… maybe 3-4 lbs because the meat is booger size.
ryc: House rocks!!
Oh, that looks delicious and very enjoyable on a balmy Spring day.
Ohhhhhh……….. that powder up yummie and the ice cold coffee……..gosh, I really want some…..lol…licking my lips……..mmm….. I have to get some coffee today thanks to your pics
Café du Monde was THE BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
what i would give for a beignet right now…
I’ve always wanted to try one. Alas, we Canucks do not have a Cafe Du Monde in sight.
what? you have a foodie following here. i’m all in!
yum yum yum.
thank u for the opinion! aspics! hahah thats crazy 10 hour –’
Hi there.
*drool* If only I wasn’t quite so far away from New Orleans, I would totally go!
-L
mmmm…it looks so simple yet so delicious!
YUM. I went to that coffee shop when I was there several years ago!
Ah, sweet Cafe du Monde. My first (of many) beignet there, I couldn’t quite coordinate my technique right and ended up spilling half of the powdered sugar on myself. It landed on my dark baby tee and made me look like a coke addict after a messy weekend binge. Still worth it, though I never did like that chicory.
very good memories…………………..
i’ve been 2 new orleans..before Katrina, & the coffee & doughnut thingys are OFF THE CHAIN!!! yum……
i <3 coffee
mallory
That made my mouth water soooo much. I had to go to their site and I ordered the Cafe Du Monde Beignet Mix. It sure sounds good!Thanx
Im going to New Orleans this summer. I love beingets and I love coffee. I must talk my parents into going there. Thanks!
Have any stories about all the helicopter pilots who helped out after the hurricane?
Lived in Kenner and Metairie for several years… each of the 50
states needs at least one Cafe Du Monde!!!
No crawfish, please, but indeed…bring on the Beingnets from Cafe Du Monde. It’s been years but I remember those TASTY treats!
i like iced coffee. . .do the beignets taste anyhing like a doughnut?
i was in new orleans for a convention two years ago, and since i was 17 i had to have a chaperone when i went out of the hotel (because a 17 year old alone in new orleans is just asking for trouble! =) ), but every morning i snuck out of the hotel to have Cafe Du Monde
Wow, those Beignets look GOOOOOD!
Oh yum- I have such great memories of that place. My face was shoved into a plate full of powdered sugar and I came out looking like a mime.
I’ve been to Cafe Dumonde many times, and always enjoy it. It’s a must do everytime I’m in New Orleans. If you see me there ..stop and say hi!
Chris
cafe du monde and all of new orleans is amazing.
we were waiting in line for the bathroom one evening and we watched them douse the beignets in powdered sugar.
they must go through TONS every day. it is crazy.
[peace♥]
I’ve been to the cafe du monde! It’s fabulous. The beignets are SO GOOD!!! That was the first place I went when I visited New Orleans a few years ago.
i used to live in New Orleans too. LOVE LOVE THAT PLACE!!!
That ice coffee looks so good! I have a sudden craving for ice coffee now =P what does a beignet taste like? I’ve never tried one, actually I’ve never even seen one before!
I’m not entirely sure how a beignet differs from a crunch version of a donut with powdered sugar, or even why it’s capitalized… but it looks, well, tempting. Notwithstanding the fact that I’m not a fan of crunchy dough, I’d still give them a try. Try everything once, right? And yeah.. crawfish boils have a place in everyone’s backyard! With potatoes and whatnot… mmm.
HA! i had the same concept for this post a few months back. cafe du monde for me was mediocre. i really dont care for the beignets, but the coffee wasnt too bad. crawfish on the other hand.. YUM!
interesting pictures
i love this place. haven’t been there in a few years.
You should check out that place during Mardi Gras.
It’s not exactly “crowded.”
However, it is a MESS.
And don’t get water from there.
Trust me.
Just don’t.
YAY!!! how cool - i know someone that was featured on xanga. hah! i am still so sad that we didn’t make it to cafe du monde on Sunday before we left. thanks for being a great host.
i had one there once…
it was good
I was in N’awlins for a conference many years ago and went to Cafe Du Monde and fell in love with the beignets !!! They are to die for!! We flew to Gulfport, Ms last april of 2006 to see my son home from Iraq. He is a Seabee instructor at the Navy base in Gulfport, Ms. I told my son I didn’t care what we did while we were there but I had to go to N’awlins to Cafe DuMonde. I had heard they were open again after the hurricane and I wasn’t going to be that close to it and not go. My son and his wife and family and my husband and grandaughter all drove into N’awlins and spent the day walking all over, of course spending ample time at Cafe DuMonde and taking lots of pics with the grandchildren with powdered sugar all over their faces. We all had a wonderful time.
You take great pictures. Not to rub it in but CDM is about 15 minutes for my house. It’s a great place to bring friends who’re visiting town. I tell them to inhale while eating the beignets. = P
Mmm, I have good memories in that place
I get the pleasure to enjoy these lovely things anytime I want. I live about 30 miles from the New Orleans Cafe du Monde, and they just built a new location about 5 or so miles from my home.
i’ve been there often. i don’t live in new orleans though. i use to live in hattiesburg ms and new orleans was our weekend getaway place.
omggggggggg you are bringing back such MEMORIES!!!!!! As a graduate of Loyola University….I miss Cafe Du Monde dearly!!!! I’ve been reluctant to return…the devastation was/is so heartbreaking it made me cry.
Thanks for bringing back my memories of one of the staples of life in the Quarter!
OH that chicory coffee. I went to New Orleans five years ago and just YESTERDAY thought longingly of that chicory!
Cafe of the world?
Isn’t that a little boastful?
i cannot believe you haven’t hit cafe du monde till now. the beignets there are amazing! i went there 3 times in the 4 days i was there last.
tip: don’t wear dark colors. beware of flying sugar.
Amen! Had Cafe du Monde chicoory coffee and a beignet during a visit to the Big Easy. The beignet was fabulous; the coffee proved to be a little strong for my northern palate. I heartily recommend the beignets though, and at least to try the chicory coffee.
I love Cafe Du Monde. It’s wonderful and all those fake beignet places are crap. I’m going to college in New Orleans next year and I can’t wait. It’s been a while since I’ve been there. It was horrible after the hurricane, New Orleans has come a long way, but it’s still got a long way to go. It’s great to hear that people actually pay attention to the little wonders of New Orleans. <3
Cafe du Monde was my breakfast and tea time every single day when I was in New Orleans… Miss it…
Looks so so good right now….
just got back from there in March! Cafe Du Monde is wonderful… we have power fights when we go.
Oh man, I miss Cafe Du Monde! It was one of the first places I went when I got to NOLA. My friends that I went out with kept talking about beinets as we were walking down the street and I was expecting some kind of high class expensive place where I’d never fit it. How wrong that turned out to be. I also never got the hang of not getting powdered sugar all over myself.
Later on a couple of my friends at CG got jobs at Cafe Du Monde and I was able to weasle free beinets out of them all the time. They’re not nearly as good cold, but still.
But a buddy of mine here at home get’s their coffee and chicory from the yuppie grocery store, so I can still have that. I love that stuff, the stronger the better.
never been there but wanna visit there once at least.
that looks too good to be real!
mmm chicory.
advice:
don’t try going to the bathroom there.
it’s really small.
[otherwise....it's most amazing.]
I don’t know where you are from…but I hope you enjoyed my wonderful home state of Louisiana and my temporary state for the advancement of my education, Texas. Enjoy the sights, smells, and wonders of the South.
~From a Proud Southerner
Oh yum,I bought the flour for the Beignets from the cafe once.. but never got around to deep frying it up… too lazy,, and messy =P
aww man i love this place.
i could eat those beignets everysingleday!!!
Hee! Hi there Mr. Yeah, those stuff are delicioso. =) I hope to visit that cafe soon.
Thanks for the insight into wonderful New Orleans, the pic’s are great and I’m wishing to taste that beautiful food. I hope I make it to New Orleans soon.
Man, you are killing me, I miss those and cafe au late, used to drive from Biloxi when I was stationed there early saturday mornings just to sit there and have some beignets and watch the early morning Quarter traffic. Alot of my family still live there, cousins and aunts, I grew up down the coast in Mobile. I love the deep south and hope I get back some day.
Hope your day goes well
Hi! I just love your entry..It brings back so many memories. I’m actually FROM New Orleans. haha..I guess when you live here, you take advantage of the fact that you have easy access to a unique place like Cafe Du Monde. I am definitely craving a few beignets right about now…
Cafe du Monde – the best beignets, hands down!
Hey,
what’s up? I never seen that Cafe Du Monde in New Orleans restaurant place before but all of those yummy delicious sweet desert and the foods look very tasty and good too! I remember I saw that Cafe Du Monde in New Orleans on TV when I watch that in the News channel and good old memories restaurant place that is that we’d always remember over there in New Orleans well I don’t live in New Orleans though anyways but right now it is good to think and remember the New Orleans city place though all the time people live in New Orleans has been pretty busy and pretty well excited to themselves and I think they had enjoy themselves living over there so they can spend some time doing whatever they suppposed to do ! I hope all of those people don’t get their own feelings go tragically upset go to their own level be down also too! well I eat only my own food at a chinese restaurant place like Thai food and Vietnamese food and Asian food and sometimes American food too! I don’t eat any spanish or mexican or guatemala food neither ! spanish and guatemala and mexican people only eat those kind of a food because that’s what it is their own religious things! all of these yummy food in the Cafe Du Monde in New Orleans makes me so hungry every time I see them on my laptop computer from the internet too but I ain’t hungry yet anyways and I have not been eating my breakfast yet so I decided to drink some coffee instead though anyways too! I like to eat like Ice Cream, Chocolate Pudding, Jello, Brownies, Cakes, Cookies, delicious pies and other delicious sweet food stuff that it taste so good and so yummy too! mmmmm….tasty yummy food yum, yum, yum!!! I would like chow down all of the tasty food for myself too! lolz! ( laughing sound ) just kidding don’t worry I’ll share with some people that I know ok so anyways good pictures and good story keep up the good work ok bye!
some sick pictures – i think im going to make some today
looks great even though im no where close…
I have fond memories of that place when I used to live in Houston…
That iced coffee looks so delicious!
your entry just made me miss nola oh so much!
oooo, how i miss the original cafe du monde….
beignets only taste like doughnuts in that they’re both made from a rising dough… beignets are about a billion times better than doughnuts, especially when freshly made right across from where you live! yes, i did stay there on one of my rendevous to new orleans… it couldn’t have been better! but watch out for the coffee, it’s chickory coffee, which is a lot different and a lot stronger than your every day dunkin donuts iced coffee… just a warning to anyone who goes there.
Yum….I was in New Orleans years ago for like one day and managed to get there. It was soooo good, if only for a fleeting moment. Thanks for the pics and drool factor!
That looks like heaven. I am a total foodie. I would probably eat 4 of them! LOL!
Ahh… Cafe Du Monde. I was there last August. My 16 year old cousin ordered a carton of chocolate milk, and I laughed.

That place looks lovely! Especially in the sunset =) The food looks really good too.
I wish I lived in America =( It sounds cliche I know, and their are some lovely places in London, but ever since I was little Ive wanted to move there. That place does look so relaxed and nice.
take care
xxxxx
i’m heading out there in August. Would definately love to drop by there, especially for the Chicory Ice Coffee!
your pictures are great.
food pictures are the best
wow, makes me want to go over there to New Orleans just to eat at that place. Yum!
I totally agree with you! I’m from Baton Rouge and one of my fondest memories is going to NO as a kid and going to Cafe du Monde. I could never move out of louisiana for that reason…and the crawfish boils…cant get much better than that!!!
I used to live in NOLA and my favorite pastime was hanging with some friends at the Cafe Du Monde on the Riverwalk.
I want some beignets now.
OMG!!! YES!!!! I LOVE CAFE DU MONDE!!!
those beignets were good. I went to Cafe du Monde during my spring break with 20 other people while we stayed in Buras, Louisiana to help out with the the state the Katrina victims are still in. It was mmm mmm delicious. Too bad they dont have beignets in California.
Yummy! I prefer Tea, but that all looks good too!
Morning Call has better beignets… it’s true.
Haha… I went there when I was really young. I don’t remember much about the coffee (wasn’t much of a coffee drinker back then) but I LOVED the “french donuts” or whatever. You should try making Viet Coffee. All it takes is Cafe du Monde’s coffee with condensed milk. It’s good…
Awsome. I buy boxes of their beignet mix and make them all the time. Rock on doughnut people!
I LOVE crawfish! Too bad they are pretty rare around San Francisco.
The last time I was there three beignets costed $1.50 (and so did the cafe au lait.) Have you tried Leonard’s malasada in Waikiki, Hawaii? They taste a little similar
http://www.leonardshawaii.com/contact.htm
Their Beignets taste just a step above Funnel Cake, but that’s still what I’d compare it to. Better, yes… worth a 10 hour drive to New Orleans, no. That chicory coffee on the other hand…
I still crave for the beignets from Cafe Du Monde, and it’s been 5 years!!!! *drools*…..I’ve searched and searched, every restaurant (even my fav) could not compare to the beignets from Cafe Du Monde.
Good review. I will look out for this place during my travels ;D
Wow! it looks sooo good.

ooohhhhhhhhh… i miss the beignets…. *sniff sniff* Cafe Du Monde.. tell me about it.. its been 12 years and I’m still missing it.. and crawfish.. >_< love love love…
most excellent! =)
HAHA – your Cafe du Monde title caught my eye! Working in NOLA myself in the CBD I was excited to see a reference to beignets. THEN I have to see your photos of all that lucious powdered sugar and ICED COFFEE. Now, I have to go take a break from work, walk the several blocks down and buy me a cup. Thanks for the shout out for NOLA!
*homesickness worsening*
hitting cafe du monde, then playing around in tower records used to be the best saturday night ever…
yum on the beignets . . . don’t like the chicory coffee . . . i still have my coffe mug from Cafe Du Monde (went in 1996) . . .
ooo looks fatty
Well, now I think I must travel to New Orleans–perhaps LA DOES have something worth leaving TX for.
So kool do u by any chance have the recipie??? if so plz send to blackyatscots
cheers
Looked delicious…my saliva is rushing down….
Please have a look at this if you have time (although I don’t think you need the second one…)
Well you may see this as a chance, or a scam =)
Anyway, I think you’ve heard of Herbalife,
I’ve been working part-time for this company for 3 months,
the result I got is out of expectation.
Believe it or not, everyone can do a part-time job for it.

Thanks! ^^
cafe du monde is also great because you get a taste of the new orleans life- last time i was there, a steet artist sang oldie’s hits of diana ross, and a pantomime stopped traffic across the street.
i look forward to your Rudy’s (ATX) post. Rudy’s is awesome! but i like the bbq sauce at Salt Lick better!
First rule of beignet etiquette – DO NOT say anything funny while people around you are eating beignets, unless you really want to get a face full of powdered sugar from the resulting explosion of laughter.
pass by..=]
the food is like making me hungry!its relly good ,and looks good
I went there to that exact same place.
amazinggg.
I was in new orleans for a service project,
and we def went to the french quarter and what not.
nice pictures btw.
peacee
It’s a story of mine. I wear the links of london in my whole life. No one knows why I love so much the ring. I also don’t know why. We even don’t know what his name is and how old he is and where he come and went. It really likes a ridiculous story. But I have a proof that is the links of london jewellery ring. It’s neither a dream nor a girl’s imagination. I don’t know if you can see this article, if you can remember the period happiness, I hope you can have a happy life.
