Snacking in NYC
New York City, NY
Otafuku and Pommes FritesTwo place that each do one thing and do it right… One does octopus balls and the other does french fries or “pommes frites”.. It’s genius idea! Octopus balls with a sweet glaze… French fries served in a cone with a billion different sauces to choose from… Life doesn’t get any better, does it?
Otafuku
Octopus Balls with Takoyaki SauceOn the menu it’s labeled as “Unsweetened ball pancake with Takoyaki sauce”. When eaten, it’s slightly crunchy on the outside, very hot and moist on the inside. I’ve never had it before… I didn’t know what to expect. It was delightful! The sauce is sweet but not over-powering, it’s a perfect match for the octopus balls.. it’s also topped with some shavings. Gotta try these! =)
Pommes Frites Menu Board of Sauces
Pommes Frites in a ConePommes Frites.. They make French Fries… yes, that’s all they do! lol Large steak fries which aren’t as bad because they actually absorb less oil, but the sauces are the main thing here.. A huge selection of sauces ranging from Mexican Ketchup to Roasted Garlic Mayo to exotic ones like Vietnamese Pineapple Mayo… All very interesting and very tasty! Both hole-in-the-walls make for a wonderful treat, don’t miss out!

yaaaaaaay love both!
hey i want some fries
the only reason why i love cities
what do you think about those fries, that store…going global? ethnic pallates will like?
Pommes Frites definitely sounds amazingly good.
Have you ever tried my favorite southern treat? You’d be surprised how good it is…”French Fry Sandwiches”!
There is a restaurant here in Huntington, European Republic, that makes pommes frites. Its very good, they do have some other offerings like potato ginger soup. The first time I ever had that was in another “hole in the wall” in Portland, Maine. They served a burger and fries in this little basket and then you got to sample all the different sauces. It was a blast.
Your entries always make me hungry *drools*

OMG!! I love those two places! Aww… now I’m craving some octopus balls. They have a place in Houston now…
Ah! Definitely hitting up Otafuku next time I’m in New York!
My husband loves takoyaki.
I wish I lived there…or at least had a visit/trip planned so I could check out the places, especially the fries. YUM.
i’m starving!!!
Gosh I love this city!
Octopus balls?
I always love reading you entries because they make me so hungry.
Mmm…sounds like it’s time to make a trip to NY!
Yum, I’m hungry.
oh my…that looks yummy!
You made me so hungry.
wow. thanks for the tip :] I’ll go there this saturday!
I would love to stop by there…
hi, nice site you have here (FOOD). I haven’t been to Pommes Frites in years. I need to revisit…I may skedaddle on over for lunch one day soon. I can already taste the roasted garlic mayo!
I LOVE takoyaki! Hopefully I can give this place a try the next time I’m in NY.
love the vibe
love the vibe
I love pommes frites! So tasty. The milkshake co. used to be right around the corner. I miss that. never been to the octopus place though. i need to be more adventurous and go there sometime.
i’ve heard about those octopus balls and how great they are. i haven’t tried them yet. they used to have a pomme frite in midtown but they closed it down. i’m so bummed! i haven’t tried that place either.
Octopus balls? Who in the world would eat octopus balls?
That sounds disturbing to say the least.
YUM!!! i want to try it all.
<3Always,
Nary
Great review!
awesome
I need help.. I dont know what to do!!
I will definitely try that when I arrive in NYC
I have yet to eat octopus balls but I think I’ll try it after your pictures and description! I’ve been to Pommes Frites before and it was pure heaven for me…I love condiments so having all that variety was fabulous! I bought a Gray’s Papaya hot dog and walked over to Pommes Frites to get fries and ate there. It was a great combination!!
I’ve never tried octopus before but after your description and pictures, I think I will! I’ve been to Pommes Frites before and it was heaven for me because I love crispy fries (they double fry the chips!) and condiments…the selection is amazing…I think I tried like 7 sauces!!! I suggest getting a hot dog at Gray’s Papaya and then ordering pommes frites and eating there. It’s a great combination
You keep making featured! Everyone I subscribe to has made featured. I really need to get cracking on quality blogging material. The frontpage twice in one year is one of my new goals of ’07 now that I knocked out most of the others…
Octupus balls??? PASS THE KETCHUP AND LOTS OF IT!!
Oh, I used to love Pommes Frites when I lived in New York…simple perfection!
Hey, if you’re ever on the coast of Maine…you should come to my restaurant. Sorry, shameless plug, but my chef really is a genius…
As a consistent NYC visitor (I’ve been here more than 40 times–I’m actually visiting right now), it’s always nice to hear about what other people find here. There’s so many restaurants, that there is no way that I could ever cover them all.
Angelo’s is great pizza up in midtown. Like…FANTASTIC.
And I think there’s a place a bit away from Union Square (go toward the lower Avenues, past Park….I think it’s on Madison. Maybe lower.) Casa Mama or Mama Casa…something like that.
GREAT Spanish food. Absolutely terrific. They make these pumpkin-goat cheese balls….I haven’t enjoyed an appetizer as much as I did those.
Check ‘em out.
And thanks for the other restaurant/snack notices.
They look so good and utterly delicious. mmmh i want so badly some otafuku now. im so damn hungry now!!!
how about posting the addresses for these two places?
cool, I’m going to New York City this weekend for the first time! sounds interesting!
gah, looking at all the pictures of the food makes me feel like I’m starving….especially those pictures of the cupcakes *drools*

Must have fries…
octopus balls looks really good.
Pomme Frites is Excellent. I found that place a couple months back when I went into NYC with some of my class mates.
Next time I hit up the city, I’ll have to try Otafuku. Who doesn’t love octopus? haha
- Squee
you always post so many yummie new orleans food and i would always drool in front of my computer, so i’m glad you’re posting nyc goodies =). the octopus balls w/ takoyaki sauce looks DElicious! thanks for sharing! can’t wait for more!
omg gimme gimme gimme pomme frites!
oh wow. this post is like the best thing that happened today.
looks so gooooooooooooooooooooooooooood
One more reason why NYC is the best. Little hole in the wall places rock.
Octopus balls?? Ew.
~~*Jelly Belly lover says: “Read my blog!”*~~~
so you’re meaning to tell me, ive been to ny ny three times, and never seen that place?!?!!!??!!! I WANT THOSE SAUCESSSS!!
oh, and hurry up and do the texas bbq entry! i saw that in ny and wanted to try it to see if it was up to par (since i was born and raised in texas and have had more than my share of bbq!) but never had the time.
alright. i’m ashamed that otafuku is in my neighborhood and i never knew. i guess i have to hit it when i get home. i eat so much when i travel when i get home i just want to eat cereal.
and you’re right… you don’t need a good camera for good pics. just a steady hand, patience, etc. i still use my point and shoot a great deal. good lenses is key for both dslr and non-dslr.
where is pomme frites?? i’ve always wanted to go there
dannnnnnnng , i’m so hungry after reading your post.. ahaha
i have got to try the octupus balls.
i am always trying new foods and that one is most certainly new to me.
great post, thanks for the tip.
Mmm, street food is the BEST!
I went to Japan when I was 16 and I did a homestay and the family’s kids only ate octopus balls. It was the most unusual thing I’ve ever tasted but to this day I still remember it. Thanks for sharing this place I’m going to go get some and eat it with a new perspective…hahahahah
I LOVE OCTOPUS BALLS!!! ^_^
i have yet 2 try those fries… they look very yummy =]
the fries look soo yummy!!
ok what do you mean octapus BALLS? do you mean testacles
they are wondering if octopus balls are ever going to be a big hit in america. i think the non-asians are going to freak that it is octopus, but it seems like japanese food is on a tear. people will eat anything japanese lately!!
Well, tako means octopus in Japanese so tako-ball actually means ‘Octopus-ball’. They had it with other fillings too like prawns, ham and cheese, bacon. It tastes great with terriyaki sauce and lots of mayo.
Octopus ball doesn’t mean eating the Octopus’ testicles! LOL!
The Octopus is chopped into pieces and put inside a ball made of dough and served with the sauces. So… it’s not as gross as what some of you think it was.
looks so good i want some now
mmm…french fries! That sound great!
My boyfriend said that to me the other night…”why I otafuku”.
His balls, however…don’t taste as good.
lovin’ the pics! lets be friends.
omg thank you for telling me about this!! my friends and i have been looking for things to do this summer and this sounds like a great place to visit. keep up the smashing reviews!!
I was perfectly fine until I read this post.
Now I am starving.
Thanks!
it looks so great !!i want to eat too!
pass by =)))
gotta love good eats!
Hmm … both look soo good. I have always been a sauce kinda of person and the type of sauce on my food is kind of like the ‘star’ of my food. And, the menu left me spoilt for choice. Wanna have … all.
Nice entry, makes people hungry and greedy. Bad.
normally i don’t really like fries but i am a lover of sauces! i’d love to try Pommes Frites!
i love the octopus balls. yakitori taisho also makes pretty good ones.
my favorite sauces from pommmes frites are the rosemary garlic mayo, pesto mayo, and sweet mango chutney. *drool*
i am not a big french fries consumer, but those certainly sound good!
THIS BLOG made my colleagues and me VERY hungry!!!
it seems that the octopus ball is very delicious!!
however, it looks like candy…
odd that they call it “octopus balls in takoyaki sauce” the dish itself IS takoyaki. huh.
i feel hungry after seeing ya pics ..!!
haa ,,
….this just made me hungry….partly because of this but also because i only ate a bowl of cereal all day…..i want all of it! except the octopus balls….personally i don’t like them but you have your own opinion and you like them so it’s okay =]
Pomme frite was once on the FOOD channel!
mmmmmm
great reviews!
glad i stumbled on your site.
and will subscribe.
i personally find those two places
extremely over-rated.
they would go out of business if it
wasn’t for their condiments.
oh i forgot to add!
have a wonderful, palatable nyc experience.
hope you have fun.
I absolutely have to try the octopus now.
…i really miss the city now…
takoyaki! it’s so hard to find in japanese restaurants. it’s rare enough here in sf. next time i go to ny i’m definitely gonna check out otafuku. thanks!
just wanted to say howdy that and i read every single one of your posts just now and i’m anxious to read more!
I think they call those octopus balls as “Takoyaki”. There are also lots of Japanese restaurants here in Vancouver, B.C. that makes them. Really yummy!
I can live without octopus balls…. no offense but I have a hard time eating things that cause nightmares.
ps… I’m sure its a cultural thing.
Hi, I love reading your entries about food! Thanks especially to your recent NYC posts as I will be visiting there soon. One question, and you may have answered this before…why are your ratings out of 7 instead of 10 (which is easier for a math dummy like me)?
weeee. xD I have to go there one day. I can just take the train.
Any kind of a snack that I can eat in anywhere else I like to go to like in a restaurant or a buffett could be the greatest place that I had been inside to eat whatever delicious and tasty snacks can go into my own mouth! New York City could had any kind of a place that they serve many good snacks and good food although I can’t be eating too much snacks like I can’t eat too many junk foods like Chips, cookies, brownies, candy or even candy bars or a lollipop or gum candies or any other junk foods that I love to eat, I go to the convenient store every time that I want to buy a snack to eat it and then that make me look at all delicious and tasty snacks that I could get and eat it and it made me go crazy and go hyper alot too! But I gotta watch out for my stomach though because I don’t want my own stomach to get really fat again because I am almost loosing some weight and my weight is 115 pounds right now though too! Very soon I will look good as new ! I want to stay healthy and normal and I definitely don’t want to end up looking like my cousin either! I will look like a beauty asian girl perfectly clean nice and cool too! I love to eat the snacks but I am trying not to eat alot of junk foods and snack though too! I can’t help myself keeping up with the snacks and the junk food too!
takoyaki means fried octopus. and the flakes are called bonita, which is dried tuna flakes. they’re freaky because they move when you put them on hot food and it looks like they’re ALIIIIIIIVVEEEEE!!!!
man,i love me some fried potato products. they have this chain called “new york fries” in korea, but pommes frites sounds so much better. *drooooooool*
i love your blogs! i’ve been meaning to try otafuku for awhile, now i know what to order! pomme frites is great.
Good eats.
now I really want a big steak fry w/ come bbq sauce!
ive actually had the octopus balls… you’re right, theyr’re delicious!
hey this is htsht2006 do you whant to be my homey
I’ll have to check it out if I ever get over to NY.
yummm…:)
Otafuku is great !… I had been trying to keep it my snacking secret for a long time, but they’re so “yum” that they’ve been featured or given mention in Time Out NY, New York Magazine, Village Voice, Various Food/Restaurant Blogs, Gayot, NY Times.
pommes frites are amazing. and they let you try out sauces.
i loveeeee takoyaki, but i usually go to um..Go haha because the last time i got takoyaki from otafuku they were so hot they burned the crap out of my mouth so im scare of them now. yummy either way. i used to crave them all the time.
ooo the viet pineapple sauce is the best at pomme frites!!!
check out some chicken and rice places especially the one on 53rd street and 6th ave late at night. you can try some good burger places like burger joint on 57th st. between 6th and 7th. it’s inside the le parker meridian hotel hidden next to an area with curtains.
OOOH Nice choices…. Otafaku is an original joint and Pommes Frites sells the best Belgian Fries. Whats your favorite dipping sauce. I’m tied between roasted garlic mayo and Sundried Tomato Mayo. Awesome entry.
Discover Four Simple Laws
…and solve life’s greatest mystery
LAW 1:
GOD IS HOLY AND JUST
In civil law, a good judge must punish crime. If he turns a blind eye to injustice, then he is corrupt and he himself should be punished.
“Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne; mercy and truth go before your face” (Psalm 89:14).
In one ten year period in the United States, 63,000 murderers were never brought to justice. These were unsolved crimes. If God turns a blind eye to those murderers, then He is corrupt by nature. It makes sense that if He is good and just, He should be angry with those who have taken the lives of others, and He should punish murderers, rapists, etc.
This is the teaching of the Bible—that God will “by no means clear the guilty.” He “will bring every work into judgment, including every secret thing, whether it is good or whether it is evil,” “God is angry with the wicked every day.”
LAW 2:
THE WAGES OF SIN IS DEATH
“…sin is transgression of the Law” (1 John 3:4)
Let’s look briefly at the Ten Commandments, and see if we have kept God’s Law:
You shall have no other gods before Me (e.g. Buddha, Muhammad, Hinduism, money)
You shall not make for yourself a graven image e.g. A god that will only send you to heaven, a god that lets you commit sin and still go to heaven, praying to Mary, the queen of heaven)
You shall not take God’s name in vain (e.g. God’s or Christ’s word as a curse word)
Remember the Sabbath, to keep it holy (e.g. fellowship with believers)
Honor your father and mother (e.g. obedience)
You shall not murder (e.g. hatred, killing)
You shall not commit adultery (e.g. lust, cheating on mate, pre-marital sex, homosexuality, marrying the divorced, divorce, backslidding from Christ, pornography)
You shall not steal (e.g. plagiarize, cheat, steal items)
You shall not lie (e.g. false prophecy, deception, one lie(s), slander/false witness)
You shall not covet (e.g. jealous of others, and property, coveting money, coveting prosperity)
Before we say we have obeyed the Commandments, this is what someone would be like if he kept the Law—he will always love God with “all of his heart, mind, soul, and strength,” and love his neighbor as much as he has loved himself. He has never made a god to suit himself (either with his hands or in his mind). He has always given God’s name reverence, kept the Sabbath holy, honored his parents implicitly, and never once has he been “angry without cause.” He has never hated anyone, had lust in his heart, or had illicit sex. He has never stolen even a paper clip or ball point pen, or told as much as a “white” lie, and not once desired anything that belongs to someone else. He is, and always has been “pure in heart,” perfect in thought, word, and deed.
The truth is, we are not like that. We have all “sinned” many times, and therefore we have stored up God’s wrath, which will be revealed on Judgment Day. The proof that we have sinned will be our death, and after death we must face God in judgment. Think of it—if He has seen our every thought, word, and deed, and if He is going to bring all our sins out as evidence of our guilt on the Day of Judgment, we will all be found to be guilty. Our conscience has shown us right from wrong; we will be without excuse. God will give us justice, and Hell will be the place of our eternal punishment. “For there is nothing covered, that shall not be revealed; neither hid, that shall not be known.”
The Bible Describes Hell
There are three words translated Hell in Scripture:
Gehenna
(Greek): The place of punishment (Matthew 5:22,29; 10:28; and James 3:6)
Hades
(Greek): The abode of the dead (Matthew 11:23; 16:18; Luke 16:23; Acts 2:27)
Sheol
(Hebrew): The grave (Psalm 9:17; 16:10)
There are those who accept that Hell is a place of punishment, but believe that the punishment is to be annihilated to cease conscious existence. They can’t conceive that the punishment of the wicked will be conscious and eternal. If they are correct, then a man like Adolph Hitler, who was responsible for the deaths of millions, is being punished merely with eternal sleep. His fate is simply to return to the non-existent state he was in before he was born, where he doesn’t even know that he is being punished.
However, Scripture paints a different story. The rich man who found himself in Hell (Luke 16:19-31) was conscious. He was able to feel pain, to thirst, and to experience remorse. He wasn’t asleep in the grave; he was in a place of “torment.†If Hell is a place of knowing nothing or a reference to the grave into which we go at death, Jesus’ statements about Hell make no sense. He said that if your hand, foot, or eye causes you to sin, it would be better to remove it than to go into Hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: where their worm dies not, and the fire is not quenched (Mark 9:43-48).
The Bible refers to the fate of the unsaved with such fearful words as the following:
Shame and everlasting contempt (Daniel 12:2)
Everlasting punishment (Matthew 25:46)
Weeping and gnashing of teeth (Matthew 24:51)
Fire unquenchable (Luke 3:17)
Indignation and wrath, tribulation and anguish (Romans 2:8,9)
Everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord (2 Thessalonians 1:9)
Eternal fire…the blackness of darkness for ever (Jude 7,13)
Revelation 14:10,11 tells us the final, eternal destiny of the sinner: He shall be tormented with fire and brimstone…the smoke of their torment ascended up for ever and ever: and they have no rest day or night.”
LAW 3:
GOD IS RICH IN MERCY TO
ALL THAT CALL UPON HIM
“But God, who is rich in mercy, for His great love wherewith He loved us…” (Ephesians 2:4).
A youth once borrowed a fast car, and in a drunken stupor, sped through his home town at 120 m.p.h. Since everything was horse-drawn in his country town, there was no laws against speeding. So the council passed a law saying that 60 m.p.h. was the maximum speed, and that any transgressors would be fined $100 for every m.p.h. over the speed limit.
On his way back through the town, the speedster decided to pull the same prank. He was apprehended, tried, and found guilty by his father, who was the town’s only judge. He was fined $6,000, and because he had no money and no words of defense, the youth was led off to prison.
As he sat in despair in prison, his father appeared at the door, and told him that he had sold all is own prized possessions and paid the fine for him. The son couldn’t believe that he loved him that much. They embraced as they never had before, and walked off in a new-found relationship, bounded together with love.
That’s a picture of what God did for us through the Gospel.
We have all broken the Law a multitude of times, but God came to this earth in the person of Jesus Christ, and paid the fine for us. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” The Bible says, “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life, through Christ Jesus our Lord.”
THE GOODNESS OF GOD
Jesus satisfied Eternal Justice, then rose from the dead, so that God can grant us eternal life. But just as we cannot earn a gift, so we cannot earn eternal life by our good works. “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone boast.”
LAW 4:
ETERNAL LIFE IS IN JESUS CHRIST
“He who hears My word and believes on Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life” (John 5:24).
Life’s greatest mystery, death, was destroyed by the One who said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life…” The Bible says, “He who has the Son, has life…”
To find the way to God, to understand the truth of God’s Word, and to received the gift of eternal life, begin by repentance and faith through a prayer like this:
“Dear God, I understand that I have broken Your Law and sinned against You. Please forgive my sins. Thank You that Jesus suffered on the cross in my place. I now place my trust in Him as My Savior and Lord. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”
If you have repented and trusted in Jesus, then you can now partake of the blessings of “the New Covenant.” Here are just ten of God’s exceedingly great and precious promises:
You have passed from death into life.
God will supply all of your needs according to His riches.
Jesus will be with you in trials, promising never to leave nor forsake you.
The Holy Spirit will lead you into all truth, and give you the power to live a holy life.
You are cleansed by the blood of Jesus Christ—God has removed your sins as far as the east is from the west.
As you abide in Christ, you will see the “fruits” of His Spirit begin to manifest in your life.
As you read the Bible daily, it will come alive to you and cause you to grown in your faith.
When you pray, God will hear you and answer your prayers.
The cross will be continual evidence of God’s love for you.
God will “keep you from falling, and present you faultless before the presence of His glory, with exceeding joy.”
Search the Scriptures daily, and see what God has in store for those who love Him; find yourself a Jesus-centered, Bible-teaching church and commit yourself to it.
May God continue to bless you as you obey Him.

Rose Garden by Awe-struck ebooks 10/17/07
omg i want some
Pommes frites make it sound exotic…and sauce makes the difference! its the only reason I think subway tastes good. I think those shaving on the octopus balls are bonito shaving. If the balls are pipping hot, the shavings start moving and they look alive. hehe very visual.
well the food looks very delicious; you have very good taste…..thanks you just gave me a good idea…………..thanx
I LOVE french fries
DFGD

I absolutely love Pommes Frites, and before I even read your post that is what I immediately thought of when I read the headline “snaking in NYC.” Their cheese fries with gravy, or poutine is hands down, the best on the menu
Gimme gimme!
)
yuuuuum. i used to go to otafuku at least four times a week for a couple months. it’s just that addictive.
and pommes frites used to be better.
oh man, i just miss NYC too much
if you’re ever in the west coast, they have pomme frites in SF ghiradelli square. Not sure if it’s the same place, but the set up sure looks like it.
If you’re ever in the west coast, they have Pomme Frites in SF Ghiradelli Square. Not sure if the place is the same, but the looks like the same layout.
One bit of clarification, please: What exactly is an octopus ball?
And the French Fry place sounds interesting. Can you get your fries with just the traditional standby, ie ketchup? I think that would be what I would want the first time I tried that place.
octopus balls? never heard of them
Good pick on Pommes Frites. They’re great!
the city’s amazing. i love it there.
where is the store arrrrrrrrr/???
ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh that looks soooo amazingly good. *drool* -L

Ear is the little side of the heaven and earth. If you wear the right jewellery, it can make your entire face luster to be enlarged. First to estimate what kind of links of London earrings suit your face when choose. For example of me, my face is a little round, so those long earrings are not good looking on me. I like small and delicate links of london jewellery I don’t ask for style, but the color should be better. I have black, white, red, green, yellow and transparent diamond earrings. For those whose face is better, the choice is much more. The style of earrings and necklace should match with the color. So that the triangle that above the neck be embraced. Friends always said that I have many links of london and they are all beautiful. In fact, I just do that. Almost everyday’s jewellery with on repeat. But also remember according to the dress to choose the style and color.
